Throughout Pacific Island nations, but particularly PNG, there is a traditional system of mutual support and cooperation among individuals, known as ‘Wantoks’. This support can come in a variety of forms, but it is most widely used for helping to find employment, financial support in times of need, and networking.
There are positives and negatives to the Wantok system, and it is engrained throughout PNG society.
It is especially valuable as a form of networking for business people. Meeting and helping one client can often lead to another client and another client, or introductions to influential people.
